Organisation

The NFI is an agency of the Ministry of Justice and comes under the Directorate-General for Law Enforcement. The NFI conducts technical scientific analysis to help solve crimes.

Advisory Council and Scientific Council

The NFI has an Advisory Council of representatives of the criminal justice chain with whom coordination is reached on the services provided by the NFI. The NFI also has a Scientific Council of prominent scientists representing various disciplines. This ensures that the forensic research is embedded in academic circles and that the NFI maintains the necessary contacts in the world of science. Both Councils advise the managing director of the NFI.

ENFSI

As a member of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI), the NFI maintains close relations with fellow institutes throughout Europe. The NFI will manage the secretariat of ENFSI until 2010. The members of this network use each other’s expertise in special areas of interest such as R&D and quality systems, thereby raising forensic examination to a higher level throughout Europe.
